It came from... The Skies!!!

It all begins on an ordinary day when mysterious alien spacecraft suddenly fill the skies, casting eerie shadows over the nations of Earth. As chaos erupts and panic spreads among the global population, you and your fellow leaders must navigate a treacherous path to secure the survival of humanity. The fate of the world rests on your shoulders, and the decisions you make will shape the future of Earth.

Will you choose diplomacy and seek peaceful coexistence with these enigmatic beings from beyond the stars? Or will you lead your nation into a desperate and courageous defense against the alien invaders? The clock is ticking, and every decision you make will have far-reaching consequences. Forge alliances, mobilize your military, engage in high-stakes negotiations, and make choices that will determine the destiny of our planet.

Embark on a gripping journey where strategic thinking, political acumen, and the ability to handle unexpected challenges are the keys to success. The fate of humanity lies in the balance, and only the most resourceful and decisive leaders will guide their nations through this unprecedented encounter with beings from the skies. Are you ready to face the unknown and lead humanity in its last stand against the alien threat? Your people await your command.

What is “It came from… The Skies!!!”?

Welcome to “It came from… The Skies!!!”, a thrilling megagame where you take on the roles of Earth's leaders during a moment of unprecedented crisis. As the Head of State, Military Commander, Foreign Minister, and Chief Science Officer, you find yourselves facing an extraterrestrial threat that has descended upon the planet with an incomprehensible technological advantage.

Players will be dealing with international and domestic issues whilst juggling with the unknown ramifications of alien visitors from from the Stars. Meanwhile, another group of players take the role of the mysterious Aliens who have their own agendas on Earth.

MegaGames are huge games with a bit of everything - role playing, combat mechanics, tech trees, bluffing, negotiation - but unlike most games they’re mostly driven by you, the player. The umpires, called the “Control Team,” will be on hand to answer questions and come up with rulings your creativity inspires. While you have agendas and goals laid out for you, megagames allow players to invent their own win conditions and pursue those as well.

Most megagamers are familiar with the famous Watch The Skies game, from which this game is heavily influenced. The Dukes of Highland wanted to put our own spin on that classic formula, so whilst elements of this game will be familiar to megagamers, there are plenty of changes and surprises to make this feel like it’s own game.

It came from… The Skies!!! is a new, custom-made game for the Dukes of Highland. We’ve designed it from the ground up to allow us to bolt on new threats which drive the story. For this particular game, we’ll be using scenario 1-B, an Alien scenario that will have been played only once before - at Gen Con 2024. If you attended that game, expect the same overarching story.

Event specifics

For this run, we're aiming on having a maximum player count of 48 players. The game will run for approximately 6 hours with plenty of breaks. You are welcome to sign up as groups and we’ll do our best to ensure friends play in the same team (usually 4 players per team). If we do not get at least 15 players, we may be forced to cancel. If you buy a ticket, please do your best to attend or find someone to go in your place. Having players no-show makes things very difficult for game organizers.

We are planning on having an “after party” immediately following the event at a local pub where we can all share stories from the day over a pint (not included in price).

For lots more information on our events, such as what to expect before the event, what you can expect on the day, please see our FAQ.

Policies & Procedures

Although there will be no explicit references to adult themes, there is a level of maturity required to understand the concepts and interact with other Adults for the long period of time. Due to these factors, the the minimum age requirement is 16.

The Dukes of Highland are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. Harassment will not be tolerated and will lead to exclusion from the game without refund. Please read our code of conduct.

Refund Policy - We recognize that sometimes things come up and you cannot attend the event. If you can find someone else to go in your place - that’s fine by us - just let us know. If you can’t find anyone to take your place, we will offer a full refund if more than 10 days before the event (as it gives us a chance to resell your ticket).

If you buy your tickets within the 7 days leading up to the event, we will have already done team assignments so whilst we’ll do our best, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be on the same team with your friends.

Tickets are sold out!

Gods of the Ancient World Gen Con 2024

This is a Gen Con event. To sign up, you must go through the Gencon system at Gencon.com

What if the Kingdom of Macedonia (Ancient Greek Empire) did not fall apart and what if the Roman Republic became the Roman Empire 100 years earlier. These changes could have been arranged by the machinations of the Gods. Let's imagine what that world might have been like, under constant threat of war, the dawn of democracy and the Gods reining supreme high from their thrones on Mt. Olympus, playing the mortals against each other in a narcissistic cosmic game.

MegaGames are huge games with a bit of everything - role playing, combat mechanics, bluffing, negotiation - but unlike most games they’re mostly driven by you, the player. The umpires, called the “Control Team,” will be on hand to answer questions and come up with rulings your creativity inspires. While you have agendas and goals laid out for you, megagames allow players to invent their own win conditions and pursue those as well.

In Gods of the Ancient World, most players will take the role of either a Greek or a Roman, attempting to develop the largest, most impressive empire. Some players will be building up their home region by managing their resources, building industry, and manufacturing fleets to sell artisanal goods to distant lands. Other players will be moving troops around the Mediterranean and conquering regions for the glory of their faction. Others will be taking the role of political leaders, developing laws for the betterment of their people whilst vying for their own political standings.

Meanwhile, a third faction of players will assume the mantle of the Ancient Gods - Zeus, Poseidon, Hera, etc. These players will be seeking to gain prayers from the mortals which will empower them to perform miracles and gain influence over their rivals.

Medusa in all her reptilian glory

Gods of the Ancient World is our very own design. Tony has been working on it for well over a year and this will be it’s debut! We’ve created an entire page to show off how awesome it is and give you lots more details. Click the button below to read all about it.

Event specifics

Gods of the Ancient World has a maximum player count of 62 players. The game will run for approximately 6 hours with plenty of breaks. You are welcome to sign up as groups and we’ll do our best to ensure friends play in the same team (up to 6 players per team). If you do buy a ticket, please do your best to attend or find someone to go in your place. Having players no-show makes things very difficult for game organizers.

Den of Wolves

Den of Wolves

It is the 27th Century and human society has spread to multiple planets. Despite political differences and internal problems, most of humanity is at peace. The various factions, spread across multiple star systems, are governed by the Interstellar Council.

This all changed eighteen days ago when the military of Wolf-1061, an insular and secretive planet-state, launched a massive, catastrophic attack against the other inhabited planets. Through a mixture of cyber-attacks, espionage and sabotage, they managed to disable the vast majority of the Interstellar Council's military, and went on to devastate their targets on the various planets.

Through the chaos, the battleship ICSS Aegis was able to survive the attack and escape to interstellar space. It soon found itself protecting and aiding numerous civilian vessels attempting to escape the Wolf forces. The "Survivor Fleet", as it has come to be known, must now provide critical resources for its survivors and vessels, whilst simultaneously trying to maintain government and social order, and mount an effective defence against pursuing Wolf forces.

Den of Wolves is a game about difficult political, military and survival choices in a long-term crisis scenario. Players will take on the roles of starship captains, officers, and engineers, as well as politicians and military personnel. The game has a focus on managing resources, as well as various units and assets – however, talking and negotiating with other players will be crucial in order to achieve success. The game also seeks to represent political and military systems, and their decisions, and so players should expect some political simulation.

You are welcome to sign up as groups and we’ll do our best to ensure friends play in the same team (between 2-6 players per team). If we do not get at least 15 players, we may be forced to cancel. Deephaven

Come to Deephaven! A narrative megagame about overly-ambitious dwarves building a new city fortress. Players will delve deep into the mountain to discover unique resources, forge legendary weapons, develop thriving trade and culture, and fight back against the many dangers they uncover!

All Dwarves are welcome at Deephaven! From the proud Mountain clans and industrious Hill clans, to the mysterious clans of the Deep. Yes, even Gully Dwarves are allowed! MINERS delve deep to find arcane metals! SHAPERS forge legendary weapons, armor, and new inventions. ARCHITECTS build awe-inspiring structures and massive fortifications. MERCHANTS handle foreign trade, FARMERS feed us, and BREWERS keep us, uh, well-hydrated! The CARTOGRAPHERS maintain the Grand Map and the INKBEARDS chronicle discoveries, announce oaths, grudges, and important events. The GUARDIANS keep the peace, and the LEGION leads us to war! Come to Deephaven! Build a new home for all Dwarves!

You will like Deephaven if:

  • You love RPGs.

  • You love crafting your own stories.

  • You understand that failures drive the stories in interesting directions.

Deephaven may not be for you if:

  • You’re not a fan of narrative-based RPGs.

  • You are very introverted and talking to dozens of people may be overwhelming to you.

As a teaser, there are 2 elements that help make this game awesome:

Firstly, there’s a massive block tower (definitely not Jenga) that stands in the middle of the room which represents where you mine resources deep in the mountain. With the permission of the Delvers (one of the guilds), anyone can have a go at digging for a resource, but there’s always the threat of the mine collapsing and unleashing something hilariously terrible upon the entire game.

Secondly, there a huge whiteboard where the world that you are collectively building will be created. The Cartographers (another guild) will be mapping out cave systems, buildings, farms, etc. onto the board and that’ll in turn create other stories. By the end of the game you’ll have a beautiful shared world that you helped form.

Event specifics

For this run, we're aiming on having a maximum player count of 70 players - our largest game yet! The game will run for approximately 6 hours with plenty of breaks. You are welcome to sign up as groups and we’ll do our best to ensure friends play in the same team. If we do not get at least 30 players, we may be forced to cancel.

We are planning on having an “after party” immediately following the event at a local pub where we can all share stories from the day over a pint (not included in price).

Gods of the Ancient World will be our biggest megagame to date, with a maximum player count of 62 players!

Policies & Procedures

Although there will be no explicit references to adult themes, there is a level of maturity required to understand the concepts and interact with other Adults for the long period of time. Due to these factors, the the minimum age requirement is 16.

Due to the ongoing Pandemic, to ensure the safety of everyone, players and control must follow these guidelines:

  • Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (unless medical exemption)

  • Mask policy will be according to whatever Gencon says.

The Dukes of Highland are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. Harassment will not be tolerated and will lead to exclusion from the game without refund.

We also expect all players to abide by our code of conduct, click the link to read it.

Den of Wolves 2023

This event has sold out. To be first to know about future events, sign up to our newsletter (further down the page).

Event specifics

For 2023, we're aiming on having a maximum player count of 40 players. The game will run for approximately 6 hours with plenty of breaks. You are welcome to sign up as groups and we’ll do our best to ensure friends play in the same team (mostly 4 players per team.) If we do not get at least 15 players, we may be forced to cancel. If you buy a ticket, please do your best to attend or find someone to go in your place. Having players no-show makes things very difficult for game organizers.

We are planning on having an “after party” immediately following the event at a local pub where we can all share stories from the day over a pint (not included in price).

Food will be provided in the form of pizza and sodas. The cost of food and drink will be included in the price of admission. You are welcome to bring your own food if you have dietary restrictions.

This year, unisex T-Shirts may be purchased as an add-on to the ticket price. Here’s the design for this event. Sizes are available in Adult Small, Medium, Large, XL and 2XL. Size will be selected during the ticket purchase check-out and the shirt will be available for collection at the event in March 2023.

  • A decision on masks will be made closer to the date (depending on whether Louisville is in the red etc.)

The Dukes of Highland are committed to fostering, cultivating and preserving a culture of diversity, equity and inclusion. Harassment will not be tolerated and will lead to exclusion from the game without refund.

Tickets all sold out!

Great news for the event, possibly sad news for you. But don’t fret, this year we have another megagame right around the corner: Gods of the Ancient World is making it’s debut and you can read all about it here. Also, if you haven’t signed up to the newsletter yet, that’s the way you’ll be first to know when tickets go on sale.

Below you’ll find some pictures of Den of Wolves the Dukes have been involved in over the past year.

Gencon 2022 - Watch The Skies: New Materials

Watch the Skies: New Materials is coming back! This time at Gencon 2022.

This will be a copy of the game we ran in Louisville on March 26, 2022 so if you missed it then, here’s your chance to participate.

If you played then, you’ll know what to expect - we are making very few changes to the game we ran in March. Of course every Megagame is different so I’m sure there will be plenty of player-driven surprises.

How to Sign Up

As this is being run at Gencon, sign up will be done exclusively through Gencon.

First off, you’ll need a Gencon badge which you can get from this link:

Secondly, you’ll need to get an event ticket and this is the tricky part; MegaGames are incredibly popular at big conventions, especially Watch The Skies. For all of Gencon’s events, you have to search for the event you want to participate in and add it to your wishlist. For more information on that, click this link. This year, the Gencon event wish list opens on May 15, 2022. Good luck!

If you’d like to try something else and/or you’re worried you cannot get into WTS, there are a whole host of MegaGames being run at Gencon. For more information, check out the MegaGame Coalition’s website.

Another option - Become a volunteer!

As just mentioned, there is an amazing North American group of organizers called the MegaGame Coalition. The Dukes of Highland are part of that coalition and it’s thanks to the MGC that we’re running at Gencon. If you’d like to be part of MegaGames in other ways (or you didn’t get what you wanted with the event wish list lottery), you could volunteer to be on the control team. Signups have been going on for a while now but there are still spaces available for a number of the MegaGames. Use this link to sign up to be a volunteer. If you help control 2 or more MegaGames, they’ll reimburse your Gencon ticket. They also have some options for accommodations.

MegaGame: Watch The Skies 2022

This is a megagame about geopolitical actors at a crisis moment, asking “how would Earth governments deal with visitors from the stars?” Each faction has to weigh its agenda with the new facts, dangers, and opportunities the Aliens represent while keeping the public quietly in the dark until this information can be spun in a positive light.
