Project Status Update #2
These days I’m working on so many different elements it’s hard to keep doing posts on specific elements - It’s a mixture of design, component creation and organizing the actual event. Here are some highlights:
Third Pass at Aliens…
Mostly we spent the evening cleaning up what we’d already written - specifing rules around Earth bases, the ways Aliens interact with the Humans etc. Eventually we found our way to the tech-tree but there’s still a ways to go on balancing. That’ll have to come later.
Component Creation
I’ve been creating these cool stickers to go on poker chips (of which I have a lot). With some sticker-printer paper and a some iconography, the poker chips look really good. Because they’re the nice quality clay poker chips, there’s something nice about how tactile the chips are too. I’ve also been printing off some dummy tracking sheets so I can start to playtest various elements. I used a tool called rasterbator.net to create large maps and other components larger than standard printer paper. I think the final version will be using something a bit more professional but this does the job for now.
Second Pass at Balancing…
Again, the phrase “second pass” is a bit of a misnomer. I’m constantly tweaking techs, costs, PR, Terror etc. My science co-designer is working on Science balancing right now and once that’s in a good place, it can be fully incorporated and we can do some full-game playtesting.
Event Promotion and Organization
Well I have a website for a start! Welcome! Despite having a degree in computer science, my website building skills are very rusty. These days, I’d argue website creation is an Artists game, not a computer scientist. Does anyone still code in HTML?!?
I’ve set up the tickets on EventBrite but I’m going to hold off on releasing those until a little closer. I have some weird feeling that you’re not supposed to release tickets too far out although I can’t really explain why.
The room is booked! I’ve been creating fliers and other bits and pieces.
I think my current plan is to see how many of my friends and friends-of-friends I can recruit before I let the world know to sell remaining tickets. In Louisville, the gaming scene is fairly well connected and I think I’d rather have people brand new to the hobby rather than advertise to veteran MegaGamers who fly in from all around the country. It’s the locals that I’m selling to if I ever want to do more of these here in town.
